OSTEOTOM3D: Designing the Future of Tibial Osteotomy Surgery

September 30, 2021

At Digital Anatomics, we are taking a major step forward in the development of personalized surgical guides. With the support of a grant from the Madrid Startups program, awarded by the Department of Education, Science, and Universities in collaboration with the European Union and European Funds in Spain, we are carrying out the OSTEOTOM3D project— a key initiative to enhance precision and safety in tibial osteotomy procedures.

Through this project, we are creating a comprehensive process for designing and manufacturing custom surgical guides, optimizing every stage of surgical planning.

Addressing a Real Need

Tibial osteotomy is an effective alternative for treating bone deformities and relieving pain in patients with osteoarthritis. However, its success heavily depends on precise planning and execution. With OSTEOTOM3D, we are introducing an innovative approach that enables surgeons to perform these procedures with greater accuracy and confidence.

The numbers highlight the importance of this solution:

  • 242 million people worldwide suffer from osteoarthritis.
  • In Spain, 7 million people are already diagnosed with this condition.
  • Every year, 50,000 knee prostheses are implanted in Spain, 80% of which are for patients with Genu Varum, where tibial osteotomy is a recommended alternative.

In addition to being less invasive, tibial osteotomy has a 40% lower cost compared to knee arthroplasty, making it a more accessible and sustainable option.

OSTEOTOM3D: Precision in Every Step

With OSTEOTOM3D, we are establishing a streamlined workflow that allows for precise surgical planning:

  1. We generate a virtual biomodel of the area to be operated on.
  2. We design and select the cutting parameters best suited for each patient.
  3. We simulate the surgical outcome on the virtual model to anticipate the impact of the procedure.
  4. We manufacture the customized surgical guides, following the surgeon’s validation.

This process is enabling us to develop TOM JIG T, a surgical guide designed to assist surgeons in performing tibial osteotomies with maximum precision, reducing intraoperative variability, and improving clinical outcomes.

With OSTEOTOM3D, we are laying the foundation for a new era in orthopedic surgery. This project is allowing us to innovate in surgical planning and develop tools that optimize precision in every procedure.

At Digital Anatomics, we continue advancing with a commitment to transforming surgery through innovative technological solutions, designed to improve patients’ quality of life and facilitate the work of surgeons.
